Eating Well with the ancient Mayans!

Ranking right up there with the ancient “super foods” flax seed has been used as a health source for many centuries. In addition to a sustenance it has been used for pain relief, constipation, lowering cholesterol, heart disease prevention and even the alleviation of arthritic swelling. In the modern world it continues to be used as a natural hormone replacement for women. As you study flax and other ancient foods like chia seed you will find a treasure of health knowledge and a key to the fitness of civilizations of old.

Many benefits are derived and attributed to flax seed. Much modern discussion and rave is centered around Omega 3 Fatty Acids or ALA (alpha-linoleic acid) and it's necessity for the body. At 1 tablesoon whole seed flax contains 2.5 grams of these acids which in addition to the above mentioned health benefits also greatly complements infant growth and development. In addition, a tablespoon of ground flax seed contains 1.8 grams and a tablespoon of flax oil contains 8.0 grams of ALA Omega 3. Demand for products containing Omega 3 is rising and crops are being implemented around the globe.

Flax seed fiber is also an important benefit for long-term health. The soluble fiber aids in removing cholesterol along the digestion processes. Great news for diabetics because it helps keep blood sugars regulated properly. It can be a daunting task to keep these sugars from rising too fast and high after eating a meal or even a snack. Consistent and proper flax intake will help in this balance. The insoluble fiber improves upon the process of digestion and maintains the proper function of the bowels. This in turn relieves constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Whole seed flax contains 2.1 grams of fiber to 1 tablespoon. At the same measurement ground flax seed contains 1.5 grams and flax oil does not have any fiber. Applying fiber to any diet cannot be stressed enough.

Lignans are a less known term in the english language. Lignans are an anti-inflammatory group of compounds among the phytoestrogen class which is also great for arthritis relief. Lignans may also be a preventive measure for breast, prostate and even endometrium cancers which may be hormone sensitive. They are also a friend to women because they help reduce the overbearing symptoms of menopause. A tablespoon of whole seed flax contains about 209 mg of lignans. A tablespoon of ground seed has 152 mg and there are no lignans in flax oil.

Many people know the term “flax seed” but don't know what to do with it or how to apply it to their diet. Flax can be treated just like chia seed. You can sprinkle it over your morning oatmeal or cereal. Many people bread their meats such as chicken or pork. Flax is a great additive for this cooking technique. Top off your pasta with ground seed or prepare your own vinaigrette dressing with flax oil. Soups and smoothies also welcome flax.

On your shopping trip look for products containing flax. Bags of flax seed can be found in your baking aisle or in your flour section. Look in the diabetic or energy section. They should have a host of flax containing products. You can go online and shop Barlean's for organix flax oils. In the vitamin section should be a line of flax supplements. For an Omega-rich product Sparboe Farms eggs would be a good recommendation for your breakfast.

Getting back to the basics of what nature intended for the body is becoming more apparent for good health. This is an assured strategy for diabetics needing a gluten-free diet. As you can see eating well can be a matter of adding flax to your already prepared dishes. Serve up your flax and live healthy!

Well done Goldenpath. I am a huge fan of natural supplements as I DO no believe in traditional doctor's. I take flaxseed daily among other things and have found them to be most beneficial.

I eat a spoonful of flax oil every day. Particularly good for vegans and vegetarians who need a earth grown source of omega.
